cvusd-citrix3 virtualization in progress

Last night, I took the plunge to remove the first server from the physical Citrix farm. This was a bit more nerve wrecking than the first server (cvusd-citrix7), as it was the first one that needed to be yanked out of the live environment.

Some complications came up during the migration, since I was moving the server in its same exact parameters to the virtual environment, so there were some issues with IP conflicts, and DNS entries, as well as removing the server from the Citrix farm.

I have cleaned out all references to cvusd-citrix3  on the BIGIP servers, so as to not create any conflicts with the new incoming virtual cvusd-citrix3.

In addition, I discovered some mis-configuration on the switch ports that connected do-esx3 and do-esx4 to the Aeries network, which needed to be troubleshot.

I’m happy to report that all the issues have been resolved with the network side. cvusd-ctirix3 will no longer show up in the server in the Presentation console, nor will users hit it when logging in to the Citrix applications. The new virtual cvusd-citrix3 is currently up and running with the same IP as  the physical one. I’m in the process of installing and configuring Citrix on it. It should hopefully be done by sometime tomorrow.

One issue I found out as I was applying updates to cvusd-citrix7 is the fact that the full Rollup update package, once installed would actually deny the server access to the license server, due to the mismatching version of the files. At this point, I’m hesitant to run any updates on the license server, since that one would affect the whole Citrix environment if it goes down. I’m still in the process of finding the individual HotFixes that are not rolled up. Unfortunately, once Citrix released the Rollup, they pulled out all the individual Hotfixes. So at this point, this remains a challenge, given the risk it presents to the environment at this point.

Will post an additional update once cvusd-citrix3 is online and operational in the farm.
