203-stu2dc has been rebuilt on 203-dc1

The following, is an update to the previous post regarding the crashed Townsend student server.

Since all recovery attempts on the server have failed. I decided to go ahead and move everything that is currently residing on the 203-stu2dc server on to 203-dc1. This way, it will match the standard that we’ve been using for newly deployed servers.

The server is still residing on a Windows VMWare 1.0.10 host. I updated the VMware version from 1.0.4 to 1.0.10, though the best action plan for this would be to move that server  to an ESX host.

Here are the changes for the new server:

  • 203-stu2dc.student2.chino.k12.ca.us has been turned off.
  • After mounting the vmdk to the 203-dc1 virtual machine, I was able to move all the data from the external VMDK to the D:\ drive on 203-dc1
  • Restructured the location of user data, so that they comply with the standard. The staff folders have been moved from d:\user to d:\user\staff. The login scripts have been updated accordingly.
  • The student folders are now in d:\user\students. All their NTFS permissions have been reset correctly.
  • There was one database on the 203-stu2dc server: All The Right Type. I moved that one over  from 203-stu2dc to 203-dc1 on d:\Apps\ATRT\ATRT Database, and re-shared it as ATRT$. Clients should still be able to connect to it without a problem, unless the IP address is hard-coded in the client.
  • A CNAME, as well as a registry tweak found in this Microsoft KB article have been made, to allow the clients to still be able to connect via SMB connect to the server with the old name (203-stu2dc)

Pending Items:

I’m still not sure whether All The Right Type is actually working correctly. If someone can check this on one of the clients, I would appreciate it.

I’m not sure whether there were any printers setup on this server (203-stu2dc). If there were, they need to be added to 203-dc1.  (Probably a Steve Bibler task)

Please let me know if there any issues with this server, particularly with staff, and/or students getting their personal i: drives.
