As some of you know, we are working on isolating the IP reservations for the labs.
To keep it simple, these reservations are divided as follows for each site:
DHCP: First 3 octets of IPs : i.e: 10.40.64.1 - 10.40.66.255
Reserved Address: Second 3 octets of IPs: .i.e: 10.40.67.1 - 10.40.69.254
Static for servers and network equipment: Last 2 octets: i.e: 10.40.70.1 - 10.40.71.254
As part of this change, and especially at the high schools, we started noticing that we are running out of IP addresses in the DHCP range. In Don Lugo's case, those addresses that were registered leases in DHCP were, for the most part, iPods, iPhones, iTouch, and other mobile devices.
On Friday, running out of DHCP addresses caused the staff, and the legit users at Don Lugo to not be able to get on the network due to the lack of ability to lease a DHCP address.
After conferring with Mike, we agreed to create exclusions of all Mac addresses of mobile devices, to not allow them to login. The link below is a google doc that shows the Don Lugo MAC address list that is now being denied to get a DHCP address.
For the most part, these hostname look very much like they would belong to a student. However, I have no way of knowing for sure.
Please watch out for any calls from people who would claim that they cannot get on the network, and if you determine that they are legit staff, please let me know and I can remove them from the list.
At this point, we will only be forbidding student mobile devices from getting a DHCP address. Staff or teachers with mobile device can be accommodated.
We're doing this simply because we do not have the infrastructure to support students getting their wireless devices on our network.
As I do the same for the rest of the high schools and junior highs (will not do this at elementaries at this point, as it doesn't seem to be a potential problem -- for the time being)
I will have a MAC Address Deny List for each school I create, and will share the link to that document with you as I create them.
