A couple of upcoming changes: File Servers

I wanted to give a heads up on a couple of upcoming changes in the next few days / weeks. now that cvusd-do-dc1 has been decommissioned, I’m looking to shuffle some data, and decommission one more server. What can I say, it’s therapeutic to remove servers from the rack ! :)

Here are the changes by order of completion target:

- All the users on cvusd-do-nas will be moved to \\do-fs2\user$ . This server currently houses all the nurses’ home folders. the NAS is quite an old appliance, and barely holding up. The only data I’m planning to migrate is the data on E:\Docs, which contains the actual data for the nurses. There are other backup shares that also exist which consume the majority of the space on the NAS. However, they haven’t been accessed since as far back as 2004, so I’m pretty sure it’s safe to discard those. If anyone has any specific information, or reason not to keep this data, speak now or forever hold your peace.

- There are currently some shares that reside outside of the perimeter of the \\do-fs2\user$\ and \\do-fs2\group$. This will also be moved under the umbrella of the main share point for the users.

- The second step will be to start migrating all the user data from do-fs2, whose store is currently residing on one of the Mac RAIDs via Fiber Channel connectivity, to the Compellent SAN, on which a new user data volume will be created, and snapshot-ted. This will give us an additional layer of data recovery, as well as a better redundant location to store important user data.

The process for moving the data to the SAN will be in batches, as there are a lot of components to consider while moving. (Folder NTFS permissions, share permissions, login scripts, folder redirection, offline availability, etc).  I will be making separate posts as I make any of these changes as to keep you all informed regarding the whereabouts of the user data.

At the end of this task/project, everyone that is anywhere within the do will end up having their data residing under \\do-fs2\user$ . Long term, and as I secure the space on the SAN, and fast connection speeds to the different sites, the goal is to consolidate the teacher/staff user data from the sites at the DO. This is a good step to perform in preparation for implementing an enterprise backup solution.
