In the past weeks, I have been conducting pilot programs on the new login script which installs the KACE agent, NOD32, Dameware, and removes LANDesk.
The log files for the user logins will also state whether this utility has been found on the user's computer.
I am finally at a point where I am comfortable enough to start pushing this out to the rest of the district.
Over the weekend, I have enabled the login script to everyone currently using the new login.bat (this includes everyone at at the district office, Adult Ed, ALC, Anna Borba and Ayala). In addition, from the schools who are still using the old scripts, this is enabled on Townsend, and Newman.
Because, I will have to make changes to every batch file script on the school still running the old script, this will take slightly longer, but I will be rolling this out in the next couple of days.
In addition to the script, I have written a small utility that the software installer will push to the user's desktops upon login. This utility is called: CVUSD System Info, and will have an icon that looks like this on the desktop:
| This icon shows up on any computer that runs the swinstall.exe (part of the login script) |
When the user double clicks on this icon, a screen similar to the following will pop up:
It essentially gives a quick overview of information that would be useful to the helpdesk, in case the user doesn't have the KACE agent installed on their computer. It also gives the user the option to send that information straight to the helpdesk, simply by clicking the "Yes" button.
The recipient of this email are any members of the Distribution List: "CVUSD System Information"
At this time, only the helpdesk ladies receive the email. If anyone else is interested in getting this info, then you would need to be added to this distribution list.
note: this is an all or nothing \feature, so, if you are a member of this distribution list, any user that ever decides to open up the utility and send the info, will end up landing in your mailbox. so, I would suggest that those of you who would like to be a recipient of this, to create an outlook rule, and a specific folder for these messages.
When the user clicks "Yes", an email similar to the following will be sent to the members of the distribution list:
Notice that there is a link to "Install KACE" in the email. Clicking this link will open up a little window asking the for the IP address. (which can be found on that same line).Typing the IP address and pressing "Enter" will install the KACE agent on the target machine.
note: The reason the link cannot automatically populate the IP address is due to a security limitation in Outlook that does not allow the passing of parameters within an email to a script. So, the next best thing was to request user input for the IP address.
