Upcoming changes: User files moving

In the upcoming weeks, I will be working on moving all data from the XServe RAIDs to the Compellent storage. What this means is that all user data currently on do-fs2 will be moving.

The path to user group shares, and home folder shares will all change from do-fs2 to do-fs1.
i.e:
\\do-fs2\user$\john doe  -- will become -- \\do-fs1\user$\john doe
and
\\do-fs2\group$\business -- will become -- \\do-fs1\group$\business

Similarly, I will also be moving all of our shares which reside on do-tech to do-fs1. This move is going to be the same for our group shares, and the home folders.
\\do-tech\user$\jane doe  -- will become -- \\do-fs1\user$\jane doe
and
\\do-tech\group$\TechIS\Information Services -- will become -- \\do-fs1\group$\TechIS\Information Services

Other shares related to scripts, and Aeries will remain there for a bit longer, and I will be communicating with the appropriate people to change any scripts or pointers that may exist.

This should not affect any users, and for the most part should be a transparent process as I will be working on making these changes at night. Also, since we are on a unified login script, the switching process will be about 150 times easier since we're now dealing with one config file instead of 150 individual scripts.

Issues that may have to be dealt with during the conversion:
  1. If I make the change to department A on Monday, and on Tuesday morning, Person A who works in department A comes in the morning, and had not turned off their machine the night before, they will have to log off and back on in order to get the new mapping. Easiest thing to do is to have them reboot their workstation.
  2. Some users may have some persistent mappings, which sometimes, the login script may have trouble with. With these users, the mapping may need to be manually removed for the script to take effect. In most cases, the mappings will get overriden by the login script, but sometimes that doesn't happen.
I will  create some document which I will share in a different post in which I will keep track of who has been moved and who hasn't during that transition, so that the helpdesk would know where to manage user data in the meanwhile.

For any questions or concerns, please let me know ASAP.
