During my initial posts about our remote control solution associated with KACE, I was working towards an UltraVNC installation.
Unfortunately, as I was doing some testing on the different platforms, and simulating different situations. I am finding that VNC, as secure as it is in its current state, and as fast as it is when it does work, I believe that if we move forward with it, we may face some issues; in addition, its support is only the open source community. For instance, the latest test has proved that a remote control connection cannot be easily established, or is flaky, when the machine is not logged in (Tested on Windows 7) , and would only connected if the encryption plugin is disabled. Additional issues have been also randomly popping up, and though there are always workarounds of sorts, I'd rather not make our operational habits based on workarounds.
As such, I have decided to cut my losses in time invested in UltraVNC, and invest some time to see if we can get Dameware to work in a more consistent fashion. Dameware has been our reliable solution that we've been using independently from KACE for quite some time now, so all I'd have to do is just figure out a way to have the Dameware agent consistently installed on our current clients.
At this time we only have a few machines with UltraVNC on them, and it's not hard to remove it. I would ask that you would try to avoid installing UltraVNC, until further notice.
I apologize for the time this is taking, but I'm trying to perform due diligence in testing, to make sure that we have the highest success rate in remote controlling clients when we're all setup.
Meanwhile, I'm not sure who carries the licensing for Dameware, but since I'm going to be working on getting a Dameware agent, I might as well install the latest version that we are licensed for. In checking the Dameware website, I see that the latest version is 7.2. Do we have a full license for this? If so, I would appreciate if whoever has that can share that with me ASAP, so that I can start working on the agent deployment.
If you have any questions, or concerns regarding the switch from UltraVNC to Dameware, please let me know ASAP.
